On Sunday, December 11 at 7 pm, the Bean Blossom Music Series presents Celtica in Celtica Christmas, a concert by Brown County musicians Tammera Lane and Tim Dooley who create music with a mood and sound that is uniquely their own. Backed up by Tim on guitar, Tammera uses vocals, keyboard, hammered dulcimer, field organ, hurdy gurdy, bowed psaltry, and harp to weave a rich, profound, and beautiful tapestry of music. The concert is free and suitable for all ages, at Saint David’s Episcopal Church, five miles north of Nashville in Bean Blossom, Indiana.

On Sunday, September 18 at 7 pm the Bean Blossom Music Series presents Music from the Heart, a concert by singer/songwriters Lynn Adler and Lindy Hearne. From the East Texas piney woods, Adler and Hearne will serve up fresh homegrown music, seasoned tunes, original ballads, and story songs. Admission is free – donations in support of the series are welcome. The concert is at Saint David’s Episcopal Church in Bean Blossom at the intersection of 135 & 45 five miles north of Nashville, Indiana. It’s a joy to offer this interesting collaboration among some talented local & IU-Jacobs School of Music musicians!  This concert promises to be one of our most interesting and enjoyable.  Admission is free, but donations in support of the music series are welcome.

The second offering of the 2010 Bean Blossom Music Series will be at 7 pm on August 16 which is a MONDAY NIGHT *** MONDAY NIGHT ***MONDAY NIGHT! It’s not our usual night, but it’s the only night we could get this terrific singer/songwriter duo. Directions to the church are HERE.

From their Organic Song Farm in the East Texas piney woods outside the rural hamlet of Winnsboro, performing songwriters LYNN ADLER and LINDY HEARNE will serve up fresh harvests of homegrown music, mixed with seasoned tunes from their combined collections of original ballads and story songs.

Coleman of Bloomington, Deborah Hutchison of Brown County, Matthew Jackson of Columbus and Stephen Stouder of Brown County at a poetry reading at Saint David’s Episcopal Church in Bean Blossom on Sunday, June 27 at 7 pm. Patricia C. Coleman is a member of 5 Women Poets and the Bloomington Storytellers Guild.  Her poems have appeared in a few literary journals and books including Sketchbook, Matrix Mag. Linen Weave of Bloomington Poets, Poets against War, Voices of Wartime and the Green Dove Peace Poetry Gallery.  She is Editor of “Beautiful Biscuits,” a collection of local biscuit recipes, revised and updated to include biscuit poems and musings to be released in 2010.

Deborah Hutchison lives with her husband, dog, cat and assorted mice in a log cabin in the woods of Brown County.  When she was a child, she believed everything was alive.  Nothing yet has convinced her otherwise.

Matthew Jackson’s poetry has evoked comments ranging from “philosophically tenderizing” to “an emphatic knuckle sandwich.”  Drawing on his inspirations, Matthew blends spoken word with Indiana home-grown imagery.  He is positive that poetry is an inspiring vehicle bringing communities and even planets closer together.  Matthew, a tea drinker and vegetarian who sometimes craves steak, has published his first collection of poetry Minding My Chaos.

Stephen Stouder, a physician and poet, grew up in Gosport, near the mouth of Bean Blossom Creek.  Seventy years later, he lives on the south fork of Bean Blossom Creek.  He began writing poems as a teenager and resumed in the 70s.   He is still at it, practicing medicine, writing poems and completing a novel.  His work has been published in Genesis, Canine Practice, and The Baptist Blast of Goleta, CA.  He has given readings at various bars, including the Alley Cat in Broad Ripple, the English Department in Santa Barbara, Zwanzig’s in Columbus and several academic venues.

First Concert of the 2009 Season – Tom Shinness – On Sunday, June 28 at 7 pm, composer/recording artist/session musician Tom Shinness opened our 2009 season with music that’s been described as …genre-bending works for solo harpguitar and unconventional instruments…a warm fusion of new age, contemporary jazz, and folk…passion and inspiration..conviction and comfort. Tom’s music has been featured on NPR and PBS. He comes to us from Big Nashville – the one in Tennessee.

Second Concert of the 2009 Season – The Chicago Reed Quartet - On August 23, Bean Blossom heard the Indiana premier performance of this brand-new ensemble. Masahito “Mas” Sugihara, Saxophone, arranges most of the music and teaches saxophone and chamber music at Northwestern University and Roosevelt University. Cory Tiffin, Clarinet, is a founding member of the Anaphora Ensemble and newly named Principal Clarinet for Green Bay Symphony Orchestra. Tim Sawier, Oboe, is a Curtis Institute of Music alumni and a former member of the CYSO (Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra). Jason Carlson, Bassoon, is also staff accompanist at Northwestern University. Visit Mas Sugihara’s site to hear some of his transcriptions.

Third Concert of the 2009 Season – Jonathan and Deborah Hutchison - The Bean Blossom Music Series concludes its 2009 season with a performance by singer-songwriters and recording artists Deborah & Jonathan Hutchison, on Sunday, November 8 at 7 pm. “Strong, exciting and moving,” their music is a unique mix, from folk to rock, classical to jazz, R&B to gospel, featuring trademark vocal harmonies accompanied on guitar, flute and piano. Their songs of hope and celebration encourage listeners to join in.

On Sunday, September 28, 2008 the Bean Blossom Music Series presented The Steve Allee Trio, featuring Grammy nominee, pianist and jazz composer Steve Allee, with bassist Frank Smith and Kenny Phelps on drums.

On Sunday, October 19 at 7 pm, the Bean Blossom Music Series presented dulcimer virtuoso and Brown County performing artist Jon Kay in a hauntingly lovely evening of music and storytelling.

Songwriter and lap-steel guitarist Pat Wictor closed out our 2007 season. In 2006, Pat was nominated for the International Folk Alliance’s Emerging Artist of the Year award and the Independent Music Awards’ Best Gospel Song.

On Friday, November 10, 2006 the Bean Blossom Music Series presented ENSEMBLE HERMITAGE, a professional vocal ensemble from St. Petersburg, Russia, performing Russian folk tunes and the sacred music of the Russian Orthodox Church.

The Bean Blossom Music Series finished its outstanding 2006 season with classical saxophonist extraordinaire and I.U. doctoral candidate Adam McCord, who gave the final concert of the current season on Saturday, November 19, featuring compositions by Debussy, Schumann, Saint-Saëns, Ravel and others. Mr. McCord was accompanied on piano by Haruko Murphy of the IU music faculty.

The Hot Club of Naptown, who played 1930’s swing jazz, jump blues standards and original tunes in September.

Heartsounds, who offered a summer concert of their original folk-rock-jazz music.

Singing in Baghdad presented Middle Eastern music.

Gordon Bonham and Stuart Norton played acoustic blues.

Rounder/Philo recording artist Carrie Newcomer is a repeat performer in the series.
